The Chancellor announced today that he will waive VAT on the sale of the new X-Factor Help For Heroes single (cover version of Mariah Carey's Hero by the X-Factor finalists), by making an exceptional one-off charitable donation equivalent to the sum of the VAT receipts collected on sales of the single.
This is good news of course. Help For Heroes provides vital care for men and women wounded in the line of service.
I know Brown waived VAT for the 2004 Band Aid single (worthwhile cause) and is doing the same for Help for Heroes (again, another worthwile cause), but why is the government still forcing charities to pay VAT in the first place?
And why has Help for Heroes come in for special treatment when others are passed by? Is it because Gordon wants to look popular (thus only 'rewards' charities with huge appeal) or does it have anything to do with the fact that Brown is chums with Piers Morgan who's also currently advising him?!!!
