The Acting Metropolitan Police Commissioner, Sir Paul Stevenson, said earlier today when addressing the London Assembly that what the Met are investigating is a substantial number of leaks from the Home Office which "potentially" involve "national security."
What is he playing at?
Either the leaks compromised "national security" or they do not. Surely he has ascertained by now whether the leaks were just embarrassing information for the government but in the public interest or grave threats to our national security?
Damian Green and David Cameron have strongly denied the leaks have compromised “national security” and have challenged people to explain how they are wrong. Looking at the information Green has published over the last two years, none stands out as putting, in any way, national intelligence, national security or international relations at risk.
What is more, why are the police investigating Green under a Common Law offence and not the Official Secrets Act if the national interest was being compromised?
The only explanation I have for why Sir Paul is using the “national security” argument is that it gives the police an excuse to continue their investigation. It also allows the government to continue to support the police investigation (and hide behind it).
